In a forward-looking step toward academic excellence, Al-Kindy College of Medicine – University of Baghdad hosted a dynamic scientific symposium titled “Using Artificial Intelligence in Writing Academic Research.” The event was part of an ongoing lecture series by the Journal Unit, held in collaboration with the Continuing Education Unit, and proudly attended by a group of passionate faculty members and scholars.
The session opened in the presence of Prof. Dr. Mohammed Shihab Al-Aidani, Dean of the College, who emphasized the college’s commitment to staying at the forefront of academic innovation while maintaining its values of integrity and professionalism.
The spotlight was on Asst. Prof. Dr. Laith Thamer Khazal, who led the lecture with insight and clarity, while the session was skillfully moderated by Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohammed Imad Ghanem. Together, they unpacked how AI is transforming the research landscape, helping academics work smarter and faster — but also raised the crucial question: How do we ensure that progress doesn’t come at the cost of ethical responsibility?
Discussions touched on how researchers can benefit from AI tools without losing their creative essence or compromising the credibility of their work. Real-world examples highlighted the power of AI in streamlining literature reviews, enhancing writing precision, and generating research ideas — while also cautioning against over-reliance or misuse.
Attendees walked away with a clear understanding of the do’s and don’ts of AI-assisted research, new tools to detect AI misuse, and the importance of academic honesty in an age of intelligent machines.
