The department teaches obstetrics and gynecology for the 4th, 5th and 6th year students.The theory part of the curriculum (lectures) is given at Al-Kindy medical college.The clinical training sessions are at Al-Elwiya maternity teaching hospital.

Department committee is responsible also for training post graduate students and they work at the hospital as doctors and consultants as they take an important part in the health services.

DEPARTMENT’S GOALS

The department goals is to provide the medical students with the basic knowledge and skills of how to deal with the women health in pregnancy and outside pregnancy, starting from preventive measures to the management of normal pregnancy, abnormal pregnancy, dealing with the most important gynecological diseases and with special concern of emergencies in obstetrics and gynecology preparing them for their future career. Seeking knowledge rather than waiting to be taught  

  DEPARTMENT’S OBJECTIVES

Is to provide the medical students (4th, 5th & 6th year) with:

A fourth year medical graduate should:

  • Be able to take an obstetrical history and perform an obstetrical examination at all stages of pregnancy.
  • Have a basic knowledge of the principles in practice of obstetrics, including antenatal and postnatal care.
  • Have a basic knowledge of intra- partum care.
  • Have enough practice experience to be able to deliver a baby and apply resuscitation to the newborn.
  • Be aware of emotional aspects of childbirth.
  • Be aware of the inter-relationships between general disease and pregnancy.
  • Be able to recognize common obstetrical emergencies requiring urgent intervention and be able to initiate treatment with appropriate first aid measures. 

A fifth year medical graduate should:

  • Be able to take a gynecological history, conduct a pelvic examination and take a cervical smear if possible.
  • Have a basic knowledge of important and common gynecological conditions including infertility and assisted reproduction.
  • Be able to recognize common gynecological emergencies requiring urgent intervention and be able to initiate treatment with appropriate first aid measures.
  • Be able to provide advices and instructions concerning suitable methods of contraception and hormone replacement therapy.
  • Small group discussion

A sixth year medical graduates:

  • They are prepared to take the responsibility after getting their M.B.Ch.B. degree.
  • They are involved in the morning report and round, case presentation and discussion, labour ward attendance, gynecological and obstetrical ward attendance, Seminars toutorials and problems discussions. 
  • They are also involved in weekly PHCC attendance to have ideas about the different programs of the primary health care.
  • They also involved in afternoon training to share the resident’s duties and to meet the emergency cases.

Students Assessment:

 Consist of two kinds:

  • The formative assessment. Which include feedback assessment (quiz, case presentation, seminars and tutorials, small group discussion and performance in the clinical wards).
  • The summative assessment, clinical exam and two written exams (mid-year and final exams).
  • OSCE examination is implemented for the 6th year student examination.
