History and profile
The department of pediatrics at AL-Kindy College of Medicine is established in 1998-1999, the department since establishment has a vital role in teaching fifth, and sixth-class students the basic science of pediatrics like growth and development, vaccination, nutrition and infectious diseases. In addition to that, the students learn the basis of how to deal with newborn babies and the common neonatal problems that they may face during their future life.
As the college practices the new curriculum since few years ago, at 2016-2017, the department involved in teaching the new pediatric curriculum to the fourth, fifth, and sixth year students which is a module based curriculum and the students are the main core of the curriculum during which many pediatric topics are to be discussed in addition to daily clinical sessions.
The department also concerned with teaching clinical examination skills for undergraduate students regarding various pediatric problems in hospital ward, emergency, and outpatient departments aiming to prepare a competent doctors eligible to examine and treat children from the neonatal period to the age of twenty one years old.
The Professors of pediatrics department has also involved in discussions of thesis and clinical examinations of postgraduate students outside the college and teaching family medicine diploma the basis of pediatric problems as a part of their training sessions. The branch provides seminars annually within the activities of college continuing medical education and has major activities in national and international scientific conferences. The department consists of a number of lecturers, assistant professors and professors whom have many published papers in their field of specialty that solve certain problems related to the health of children and even society in general.
Vision
The department works to prepare competent doctors able to put their experience and skills in the practical field for the advancement of health reality of Iraqi children and the community through health care and the provision of services and advice to the mother and child.
Message
The message of pediatric department is to prepare undergraduate students that have been well trained and qualified to promote the reality of health of children through provision of academic educational opportunities applied at the college and hospital, as well as to support and encourage faculty through training courses to promote and develop the scientific and clinical skills of students.
Teaching Objectives
- Teach students the art of pediatric history taking and clinical examination and to provide them with information of how to treat common pediatric problems.
- Provide students with information through clinical training to upgrade their clinical examination skills for children of various age.
- To provide students with information increase their practical experience to manage important diseases that affect children.
- Improve their information so that they can provide health advice and guidance for children’s health.
