Introduction

     The medical skills laboratory is regarded as an achievement in the medical College in general; it is regarded as one of the factors or the requirement for the Accreditation by the WHO for the medical College.

      It is regarded that the medical skills lab. Globally and locally is one of the teaching tools that it should be available for the medical student, these facts have been approved decades back for the international medical College, in addition to that it is indispensible teaching tools mainly for the end stages of the medical College ,including dentistry, veterinary and nursing College, because it will add an information and practical knowledge which will help to fix basic knowledge, also it will help to practice some clinical tasks that is impossible to do it on real patient for the reasons already known for everybody. Medical skills Lab.submitt models and simulators which are more or less like actual human being and clinical skills could be performed on such a models in a way similar to life performance.

      Medical skills lab. In AL-Kindy College of medicine have been started after the agreement of the College Committee according to the administrative order (No.3094 in 28|10|2008).                                                   

The medical skills lab. at that time started in a small space, and it is linked to the scientific deputy of the dean from administrative point of view. After that the lab. is transferred to the clinical building, in a more roomy area and better appearance than before. Now the medical skills lab. consist of two big halls which have been supplied by all the teaching tools, that I will talk about it latter on, and now it is regarded as complementary for all the clinical branches(surgery, internal medicine, gynecology and obstetrics and pediatric department), and even some of the basic branches( anatomy , physiology………etc).

 

The purpose of the medical skills lab.

       The medical skills lab. and since it start, it adds an important educational tool for the clinical branches mentioned above, and there is already fixed Scatual of these branches to regulate the attendance of the students of the 4th,5th, and 6yh stages with the responsible teaching stuff of that branch. The medical skills lab. adds a new issue to the teaching program:

To study some clinical cases on models prepared for such a reason, and to study the relation between clinical problems and the basic physiology and anatomy.

To perform some clinical tasks or skills that is impossible to be performed by the student and even the new resident doctors in his practical life like

·         Male or female bladder catheterization

·         Thoracostomy tube

·         Nasogastric tube insertion.

·         Take a sample of blood.

·         Give intravenous fluid.

·         End tracheal intubation.

·         Suturing of a wound.

·         Breast examination.

·         Vaginal examination.

·         Suturing of perineum or episiotomy.

·         Colonoscopy.

·         To practice the principles of minimal invasive surgery.

To see some of the basic physiological facts in a simple and computerized way:

·         Central and peripheral nervous system.

·         The function of the kidney.

·         Heart function

·         Pulmonary and systemic circulation

Divisions of the medical skills lab.

      The medical skills lab. Consist of two halls

     

1st hall

This hall consist of the anatomical specimens which has a relation with the clinical branches (surgery with all its specialities, internal medicine with all its specialty, gynecology and obstetric, pediatric. These specimens are important for the student to understand the clinical pathologies:

·         Anatomy of the ear.

·         Anatomy of the eye.

·         Anatomy of the nose and par nasal sinuses.

·         Knee and elbow joint dissection.

·         Dissection of the GIT system.

·         Dissection of the brain.

·         Dissection of the nervous system.

·         Dissection of the heart and the major vessels.

·         Dissection of the uterus and the adnexia.

2nd hall

This hall consist of the clinical skills models and simulators of the different clinical branches and emergency resuscitations (ATLS, CPR):

·         Male catheterization model.

·         Female catheterization model.

·         Thoracostomy model.

·         Endotracheal intubation model.

·         Nasogastric tube model.

·         Injection training model.

·         Taking sample of blood model.

·         Giving fluid model.

·         Suturing model.

·         Venous cut down model.

·         Desk and portable laptop for the OSCE examination.

·         Different CDs for different medical and clinical problems and physical examinations.

·         Data show and screen.

·         X-ray viewer.

·         Vacancy for small group teaching.

 

Achievements

       The medical skills lab. of Al-Kindy medical College is one of distinguish centers, and the dean put a fix budget for the import of different  models from a recommended sources(English, American and Germany) and simulators for the improvement of the lab. standard, and since the start of the lab. 

 

  • We train the 6th year medical student about most of the clinical skills mentioned before and for the different clinical specialties with a fix prescatual issue.
  • We train the 5th year medical student  about the different specialties(Ophthalmology, ENT,Anasthesia, Orthopedic,, urology, and cardiovascular) with a fix prescatual.
  • We train the 4th year student about some of the surgical, medical and gynecological clinical tasks.
  • The medical skills lab. Participate actively in the OSCE examinations of the different department mainly the surgical department with different models for the different tasks, because the examination was actively conducted in the halls of the labrotary.
  • Deliver some medical movies and medical demonstration of different physical examination and surgical operations and clinical procedures in a form of small group teaching.
