The Continuing Education Unit at Alkindy College of Medicine, University of Baghdad, organized a scientific symposium titled “Gender Differentiation: Clinical and Social Perspectives.” The event was held under the patronage of Dean Prof. Dr. Mohammed Shahab Al-Aidani and featured a presentation by Dr. Mohammed Emad Ghanem, a specialist In Human Anatomy, Histology and Embryology.
The symposium was attended by Assistant Scientific Dean Prof. Dr. Taghreed Al-Haidery, Assistant Administrative Dean Dr. Jamila Ghadhban, faculty members, and college staff.
Dr. Mohammed Emad Ghanem delivered a comprehensive presentation covering various topics related to gender differentiation, both clinically and socially. His presentation focused on the embryonic development of the reproductive system and external features, emphasizing the timing of differentiation between male and female fetuses and the role of the Y chromosome in determining the development of gonads and external genitalia.
He also discussed Müllerian duct persistency syndrome, androgen insensitivity syndrome, and congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Dr. Ghanim shed light on the environmental and biological factors influencing sex formation and the impact of upbringing on children.
Dr. Ghanim presented the latest updates from the World Health Organization (WHO) on On gender terminology surgery and the controversies surrounding the benefits claimed by those who undergo gender reassignment. The drastic changes in normal anatomy in surgeries of gender changes are dysmorphic, costy and unreasonable.
The presentation successfully integrated the medical and social aspects of these complex issues, reflecting the growing interest in gender differentiation and its impact on individuals and society as a whole.
