The Continuing Education Unit at Al-Kindy College of Medicine, University of Baghdad, held a practical workshop on the impact of Behçet’s disease on eye health, aiming to raise medical awareness and strengthen early diagnosis and treatment skills to reduce vision-threatening complications. The workshop was attended by the Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs Asst. Prof. Muhannad Munther Abdulghani, the Administrative Assistant Dean Asst. Prof. Hijaz Ismail, and faculty members.

The workshop was delivered by Dr. Sura Louay Kazim, who explained Behçet’s disease as an autoimmune condition that can seriously affect the eyes. He noted that many patients may develop chronic inflammatory episodes, with symptoms such as eye redness, pain, and blurred vision.

The session addressed uveitis, one of the most serious complications, resulting from the immune system attacking ocular tissues. It highlighted how the disease can cause severe visual disturbances and, in advanced cases, lead to the accumulation of inflammatory cells inside the eye.

The workshop also emphasized that recurrent inflammation may damage the retina, potentially causing partial or complete vision loss if early diagnosis and treatment are delayed. Participants discussed the importance of regular eye examinations and early therapeutic intervention using corticosteroids and immunosuppressive agents to limit complications.

The workshop was attended by Asst. Prof. Muhannad Munther Abdulghani and Asst. Prof. Hijaz Ismail, along with faculty members. The session was chaired by Dr. Asif Mohammed, who facilitated the scientific discussion and witnessed strong engagement from attendees.

The workshop concluded by reaffirming its goal of improving clinical knowledge and skills related to Behçet’s disease to help protect patients’ eye health and prevent severe complications.
