In a proactive step to address the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), Al-Kindy College of Medicine, in collaboration with Al-Rusafa Health Authority, organized a seminar during World Antimicrobial Awareness Week. The event highlighted the critical need for responsible antibiotic use and adherence to national treatment protocols to combat the rising threat of AMR.
Pharmacist Lubna Zuhair Abdulkarim, head of the AMR Unit, delivered an insightful keynote presentation. Her lecture explored the WHO AWaRe (Access, Watch, Reserve) classification system, a globally recognized framework designed to optimize the use of antibiotics and reduce misuse.
The lecture focus on
Rational Antibiotic Use: Emphasizing evidence-based practices and promoting adherence to national guidelines.
WHO AWaRe System: A detailed overview of the antibiotic classification to guide responsible prescribing.
Antibiotic Dispensing Regulation: Discussing the importance of controlling antibiotic sales to reduce overuse and resistance.
The seminar brought together healthcare experts, faculty members, students, and professionals from Al-Rusafa Health Authority. It was chaired by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Shihab Al-Aidani, Dean of Al-Kindy College, and supported by Prof. Dr. Jamila Ghadeban, Administrative Assistant.
The interactive discussions that followed allowed participants to voice their concerns, exchange ideas, and collaboratively explore solutions to mitigate AMR risks. To reinforce the messages shared, attendees received health-focused brochures and participated in one-on-one awareness sessions.
This seminar underscores Al-Kindy College of Medicine’s dedication to equipping the next generation of healthcare professionals with the knowledge and tools to tackle pressing global health challenges like AMR.
