Al-Kindy College of Medicine at the University of Baghdad, represented by its Medical Education Unit, organized a workshop entitled “Psychometric Analysis in Medical Education: Evaluating and Improving Assessment Quality.”
The workshop was led by Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Hashim Matloob and brought together the Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs, heads of scientific departments, members of the Medical Education Unit, educational module coordinators, and staff involved in assessment and examinations.
The workshop focused on the practical implementation of the 2026 Integrated Medical Education System Accreditation Guide for Iraqi Medical Colleges, issued by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research / Department of Studies, Planning and Follow-up.
Particular emphasis was placed on post-examination item review and the use of psychometric indicators to evaluate the quality and performance of examination questions.
Participants received practical guidance on key elements of psychometric analysis, including item difficulty, item discrimination, and the effectiveness of distractors in multiple-choice questions. These indicators help determine whether individual questions appropriately assess students’ knowledge and distinguish between different levels of academic performance.
The workshop also addressed methods for identifying questions that require revision and demonstrated how psychometric results can be used to improve future examinations and strengthen institutional question banks.
A central theme of the workshop was the transition from simply analysing student scores to systematically evaluating the quality of the examination itself. This approach supports the use of assessment data to make evidence-based educational decisions and promotes continuous improvement within the academic programme.
The activity forms part of the Medical Education Unit’s ongoing plan to strengthen faculty capacity in assessment and evaluation, enhance quality assurance practices, and support the implementation of integrated medical education and academic accreditation requirements at Al-Kindy College of Medicine.
